11+ Entrance Examination 2017

In order to sit the entrance examination, boys must first be registered with the RGS.

The Registration Form is available to download from the website, and should be returned to the Admissions Registrar, Kathryn Sweet, with the registration fee by Tuesday 1 November. The information outlined below will be sent by the Admissions Registrar to the parents of all registered candidates, along with an 11+ January 2017 Reply Form.

Full details of the RGS entrance examination process and RGS Scholarships can be found in the Admissions Supplement document.

If you have any questions regarding the admissions process, please contact the Admissions Registrar.

Entrance Examination

The RGS entrance examinations will be held on Saturday 14 January 2017 and boys will also be interviewed during the day. An 11+ January 2017 Reply Form must be completed for each candidate and returned with a passport-sized photograph of the candidate to the Admissions Registrar before Friday 9 December 2016.

On the entrance examination day, candidates should be brought to the front entrance of the Main Building between 8.45am and 9.00am. There will be a short meeting for parents in Great Hall at 9.10am when the details of the assessment process will be explained. Parents should allow plenty of time to find somewhere to park as there is no parking available on the school premises.

Lunch and a snack at break will be provided and the boys will finish the examinations at approximately 2.45pm. They should be collected from either the front of the School or from North Court (behind the Main Building); further information will be provided on the day.

The RGS do not advise special preparation for the examinations: the simple tests of literacy, numeracy and clear thinking are designed to reveal potential rather than test achievement. In addition, the Admissions Registrar will write to the Heads of the boys’ current school asking for a confidential report on them. A pen, two sharp pencils, a ruler and a rubber are all the equipment needed. It is not necessary for boys to wear their school uniform on the day – the boys should be as relaxed as possible.

Please note that in addition to the multiple-choice Mathematics and Verbal Reasoning papers, the English Comprehension paper will also be multiple-choice from 2016.

After the examinations, some boys will be invited back for a second interview. The interview dates are 24 January (morning), 25 January (afternoon), 26 January (morning), 27 January (morning) and 3 February (morning). If it is impossible for the candidate to attend on any of these dates, parents should email the Admissions Registrar before the entrance examinations at admissions@rgs-guildford.co.uk. The interview schedule will be drawn up almost immediately after the examinations and, except for illness, appointments cannot be changed.

Scholarships - Academic and Music

Those boys applying for places at 11+ who perform best in the entrance examinations will automatically be invited to compete for our Academic Scholarships in further examinations to be held on Wednesday 1 February.

Parents who are interested in an 11+ Music Scholarship should indicate this on the 11+ January 2017 Reply Form so further information and an application form can be sent; completed forms must be returned by Saturday 14 January. Music Scholarship auditions will be held on Monday 30 January and Tuesday 31 January.

Bursaries

Entrance bursaries may be offered to boys applying for entry at 11 whose parents’ income and assets fall below a certain level. Parents who would like further information and an application form should tick the relevant box on the 11+ January 2017 Reply Form so these can be posted. The closing date for receipt of applications is Saturday 14 January 2017.
