Mallison Library

The Library aims to support and enrich the curriculum for every boy in the School and to embed in them a life-long habit of reading for pleasure.

In a world where huge volumes of information are easily available, the Library also works to equip all students with the skills they need to become independent, discerning and ethical learners.

The extensive book stock reflects the School’s objectives and the high ability of the boys, and care is taken to choose and promote works which challenge and expand boys’ knowledge and understanding of the world while remaining attractive. In addition, the Library subscribes to a number of electronic databases, ensuring that boys have access to reliable digital material at every stage of their school career; in the Sixth Form, boys become familiar with the most scholarly resources, easing the transition to university study. A wide variety of periodicals is also stocked, covering both curricular and extra-curricular subjects, as well as several daily newspapers. Fiction is wide-ranging in terms of both style and genre and there are frequent diverse events and promotional activities aimed at encouraging reading for pleasure.

All boys will receive an initial induction and several further sessions of library-based training during the course of their RGS career in order that they make optimum use of the facilities available and develop the independent research skills which are crucial for success in higher education and beyond. This training supports the School’s teaching of study skills, evaluation of sources, critical analysis and acknowledgment of others’ work. Academic departments are encouraged to collaborate with the Library wherever possible in order to place information literacy in a practical context.
